3 Ways to be an Effective Servant Leader – How To Change Your Organization from The Bottom Up!

So in our previous post Servant Leadership How To Lead From The Bottom, we broke down the  fact that a servant leader is someone who puts the needs of others first, while modeling and influencing others to follow their example. Servant leadership is a unique concept and one that I have personally been able to apply in my own personal work life. In my experiences I learned that an effective servant leader:
  1. Knows how to listen
  2. Changes their leadership paradigm
  3. Trusts others

Knows How To Listen

Being able to listen and listen well is pivotal in being able to make sound decisions. The people who are on the “ground” floor of the operation help the CEO or organizational leader make the best decisions to advance the organization forward. I have learned that Active Listening is the most effective way to listen. It ensures that your actively engaging your staff and shows your staff members that they are heard (Check out Mindtools). Effective leadership skills requires:
  1. Avoiding distractions and avoiding the dangers of being bored.
  2. Acknowledgment – This focuses on telling the staff member that you are receiving what is being said. This can come in a head nod or an acknowledgment.
  3. Responding to the speaker in an occasional question or comment to recap what has been said communicates that you understand the message.
  4. Avoiding the danger of preparing a rebuttal!
  5. Avoid being distracted by environmental factors. For example, side conversations.
  6. “Listen” to the speaker’s body language.
So to be honest, in order to effectively apply all of the aforementioned skills, it’s important that you make a deliberate decision to apply the strategies. Daily I would remind myself that I am an active listener who ” speaks directly, avoid distractions, avoid the dangers of a rebuttal, avoids being distracted and watches my body language. It helped, but you can apply any skill or method that you deem helpful. Check out The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change.

Change In Leadership Paradigm

So the idea of changing your paradigm requires that you identify the paradigm that you are trying to change. A paradigm shift is a fundamental change in a persons societal view of the world. As you begin your paradigm shift it is important that you identify what are your views about an effective leader. As a school leader, I found it best to actually list my perceptions of an effective leader. Some of the sentences that I came up with were
  • “I dictate and people follow”
  • ” my staff need to do what I tell them to do when I tell them to do it”
After some thought I had to question, analyze and reflect on my list. I wrestled with the fact that it’s one thing to read about effective leadership, but it is another thing when you are trying to motivate people to do it your way. Once I was done creating this list I decided to create another list on how to be an effective servant leader (There are leaders in all stages in an organization, so it is critical to create a list that embraces your role and challenges). Some of the things I identified were:
  1. Lead not dictate – Seek to model organization, timeliness and follow-through. Perform each task at my best without over-doing it.
  2. Be an effective listener
  3. Know when to not speak and let others lead.
  4. Actively work to support my team as they lead in various areas.
Your list will be different, but all geared towards one goal, servant leadership.

Trusting Others

Being able to trust others is key to effective leadership. Imagine having to do the work of your staff? As a leader, if you had to double-check the work of your team, then you might as well remove that position and do it yourself. Well, the ability to trust others is critical in managing your staff. The topic of trusting others will require deeper thought and will be expounded in another article, but to effectively implement this section you must be able to trust and not fear. This will also mean that you are supporting your team when they make mistakes.
So in summary, the cost of effective servant leadership requires that a person knows how to listen, changes their leadership paradigm, and trust others who are smarter than themselves. This is part of on ongoing series, but what are your thoughts?
